Dear Ernie,
I just saw your webpage. Thanks for all the good work. It's helpful.
A friend of my brothers died on June 22, 1967. He was an RTO [radio telephone operator], and with eight months in Vietnam, I think he was Platoon RTO, probably with third platoon. His name was Russel Engle.
The audio tapes of radio transmissions were made after the Platoon Lieutenants and RTO's were already down.
Do you have any recollection about the transmissions made by Alpha 2 and Alpha 3 that day? Others have reported hearing an RTO talking for several minutes, ending by saying he'd been hit five, no, six times, and ending with NVA voices as the mike was kept on. The Third Platoon leader was Richard Hood, from Florida; my friend, who was probably third platoon RTO, was from New Jersey, but had a slight southern accent as well.
If you happen to recall any details of the Alpha 2 and Alpha 3 transmissions made that day, could you let me know. Thanks.
